Why not exercise?

by Justin Qualler on July 14, 2009

I often hear people lamenting and laughing at their failure to get regular exercise. How did this come about?

It’s a strange problem of developed nations—people don’t take care of themselves when they have all the opportunities to do so easily.

Often, these are otherwise successful people who fail miserably in one particular aspect of life: their health.

Is it the images of gyms and perfect bodies that dissuade so-called average people from entering? Is it the idea that you have to go to a gym to exercise? (You don’t, by the way.)

Maybe it is American masochism. Another seeming truism is that when someone first goes to the gym, they totally overdo it and get ridiculously sore afterward.

Then they miss a few days due to soreness and become inconsistent.

We all have different goals in life, but health should be a primary one for everyone. It is at the root of everything we do, yet we take it for granted each day.

Exercise is not torture—it’s your insurance policy for enjoying life at a later age. It’s also your feel-good drug that eliminates stress and release natural narcotics in your body right now.

Why not exercise?
