Strange Priorities

by Justin Qualler on October 22, 2009

Rather than becoming more active and watching more closely the amount of food we eat, we’ve created a multi-billion dollar fitness industry. I guess that makes sense if you want to add additional complications to life: am I doing the right exercise? Oh no, how many calories were in that morsel of food? Is this exercise hitting my pecs?

I wonder. If we moved around more and ate less, would we even need the fitness industry at all?

Athletes, soldiers, law enforcement, and fire fighters can certainly benefit from the fitness industry and from human performance research. But the general public? Office workers? I think it’s just easier to stay active and eat less and not worry about fitness and whether that exercise is properly targeting your vastus medialis.
