Strong hands for better yard work

Developing strong hands (and a strong stomach) will help you in untold ways.

Having abundant strength in these areas is super-practical and you’ll feel it with every shovel load, wheelbarrow haul, and every time you pick on one of your kids (or your wife).

In this video, I’m talking about the kettlebell clean, a favorite exercise of mine.

Focusing on this exercise, even if it’s just 5-10 reps total, will have a good impact on your hand strength.

If you want to use the clean to develop your hand strength, here are some ideas:

  • Use a weight you can easily handle and do 10-15 reps
  • Use a moderate weight for 5 reps
  • Occasionally use an easy weight for a 5 reps
  • Have some volume sessions – if you exercise 3 times per week, maybe every second or third week do a volume session where you do 20-30 reps, either at one go or a few sets.
  • Combine the clean with the press

The clean is a very powerful exercise. It’s the hand strength and then the impact. Practice a hard tighten on impact. A ridiculous tighten. The type of body tightness where someone is going to hurt their hand if they hit you.

That’s the clean. You can develop a lot of power with it. Very worth while exercise and the hand strength benefits are great.
