Finding your own style

Working from home has taught me a lot.

Who I am, what I like, how I want to spend my time, how I plan my day…

And how I train.

First of all, if you’re not commuting, you don’t move as much. The bathroom is a 30 foot walk max.

This is the first time I’ve actually enjoyed the treadmill. It’s right there and I like that I can set my speed and know how fast I’m walking,

Baseline activity has become key.

Leveling out the activity over the course of 7 days. If my weekend is physically demanding, I have to train for my weekend.

If my kids are into some sort of activity, I train that activity too.

See the kids move around so effortlessly is inspiring. Heavy weights runs counter to that for me.

I still find I like heavy weights and exhibiting feats of strength. I can press my 40 pound daughter over head, as she’s seated on my hand. That kind of stuff is cool, but if I focus on that, I’ll destroy my joints and sap my vitatity.

Vitality, ah, there’s a word for ya

How much vitality you have is dependent on your nerve force. Two key things here. How I eat and sleep. I prioritize sleep. I have a gentle alarm that lights up before it rings. Light blocking shades, and so on. Eating is a matter of a daily salad, 24 hour weekly fasting, and trying not to overeat.

Training matters, too. You could do a 20 rep set of squats that’s too heavy for you and weaken yourself into sickness if you don’t allow adequate recovery. Heroic efforts are for David Goggins. And in any case, Goggins progressed to be where he is and has different priorities and purpose.

It’s energy management.

Finally, there is the supplementation aspect.

I’m a cod liver oil guy, and I’ve been taking vitamin D. I’ll see what my levels are in September when I run a bunch of blood work for the annual physical. Lately I’ve taken more vitamin C. Just this past week. It’s ragweed season and initially I started taking Zyrtec to relieve symptoms. It gave me too many side effects so I stopped.

We also went to the state fair right around this time and there were some big crowds we mingled amongst. A heavy dose of vitamin C felt appropriate. Some people recommend very high doses of this vitamin.

It’s a Sunday afternoon so I’m getting ready to start the 24 hour fast. There’s always a sense of anticipation as this time comes. The purification…and the pain of not eating for 24 hours.

This is all part of my own style. Doing some basic fundamentals and trying to get them right. The more I dig into the fundamentals, the simple it becomes.
